Big Bash League 2022-23 Top Run-Scorers

In the 2019-20 season of the Big Bash League (BBL), the versatile all-rounder Marcus Stoinis etched his name into the record books by amassing an unprecedented 705 runs in a single edition, establishing a benchmark for future performances.

The Big Bash League 2022-23 season commenced with an electrifying clash that set the tone for what promised to be another thrilling edition of the tournament. On the inaugural day, Sydney Thunder, aiming for their second title, secured a nail-biting victory by just one wicket against Melbourne Stars.

The very first ball of the tournament, bowled by Melbourne Stars’ batter Joe Clarke, raced to the boundary, signaling the start of what was expected to be a season characterized by an abundance of fours and sixes, with high-scoring thrillers galore.

Adelaide Strikers’ duo, Chris Lynn and Matthew Short, made their presence felt among the leading run-scorers in the BBL 2022-23 season. Chris Lynn, renowned as the all-time leading run-getter in BBL history, opened his campaign with two consecutive 30-plus scores. Notably, he contributed a steady 27-ball 36 in a match where Sydney Thunder recorded the all-time lowest team total in T20 cricket. On the other hand, Matthew Short launched his season with a blazing 53-ball 84 in the opening match against Sydney Sixers, setting a high standard for himself and his team.

Colin Munro of Brisbane Heat emerged as a formidable contender for the top run-scorer title. Munro, known for his ability to clear the boundary with ease, lived up to expectations with his explosive batting displays. Despite Brisbane Heat’s overall campaign not going according to plan, Munro seemed poised for a successful individual journey. His standout performance came in the form of a scintillating 98 off 53 balls against Sydney Thunder, even though his heroic effort ended in a losing cause.

The BBL 2022-23 season showcased a plethora of power-hitters in contention for the prestigious Golden Bat award, which recognizes the top run-scorer at the conclusion of each season. Among these contenders were Englishmen James Vince, Alex Hales, and Joe Clarke, as well as Australian trio Josh Inglis, Aaron Finch, and Oliver Davies. Each of these batsmen aspired to claim the coveted award and etch their names in the tournament’s history.

An intriguing historical note is that Alex Hales remains the sole overseas player to have secured the Golden Bat award in the tournament’s history. His remarkable performance in the 2020–21 season saw him amass 543 runs in 15 matches, boasting an impressive strike rate of 161.60.

Now, let’s take a glance at the top run-scorers in the Big Bash League 2022-23 season. Here’s a rundown of the top 5 performers:

  • Aaron Hardie, representing Perth Scorchers, amassed a total of 480 runs across 15 matches.
  • Matthew Short, playing for Adelaide Strikers, contributed 458 runs during his 14 appearances.
  • Josh Inglis, a member of the Perth Scorchers, achieved a remarkable 431 runs in just a single match.
  • Aaron Finch, representing Melbourne Renegades, notched up 428 runs across 15 matches.
  • Chris Lynn, donning the Adelaide Strikers’ colors, accumulated a total of 416 runs throughout 11 matches.

As the BBL 2022-23 season unfolded, cricket enthusiasts worldwide eagerly followed the performances of these dynamic batsmen. With a blend of seasoned veterans and emerging talents, the stage was set for another edition of the BBL filled with breathtaking displays of power-hitting and memorable innings. The race for the top run-scorer position added an extra layer of excitement to an already action-packed season, promising more exhilarating cricket in the days to come.

BBL Schedule & Latest News

The 13th edition of the Big Bash League (BBL) is set to kick off on December 7, 2023, with a thrilling clash between the Brisbane Heat and the Melbourne Stars. As the new season approaches, teams are actively scouting potential additions to their squads, aiming for success in both the BBL and Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). A total of 50 players have been placed in the prestigious platinum bracket, featuring some of the biggest names in cricket, such as Nicholas Pooran, Haris Rauf, Harry Brook, and Zak Crawley for the BBL, and star players like Harmanpreet Kaur, Marizanne Kapp, and Alice Capsey for the WBBL

Interestingly, the platinum list in the BBL boasts a significant presence of English players, with 14 cricketers from England included, making them the most represented nationality in this category. This reflects the exceptional performance of the English national team across all formats of international cricket. However, there is uncertainty regarding the availability of these players for the entire BBL season due to England’s commitments. In December, England is scheduled to play a white-ball series against the West Indies, followed by a five-match Test series against India starting in January. Consequently, players like Brook and Crawley might miss a substantial part of the BBL season, which is scheduled to run from December 7 to January 24.

One notable development for players in the BBL is the significant increase in salary bands compared to the previous edition. Platinum players, for instance, will earn AUD 420,000, up from AUD 340,000 in the previous year. However, this substantial amount will be paid in full only if the player makes themselves available for the entire BBL season. If a player participates in only 10 matches, they will earn AUD 400,000, and for nine matches, the earnings will be AUD 380,000. Any cricketer playing eight or fewer matches will receive AUD 360,000, regardless of the number of games they play. Meanwhile, gold players will earn AUD 300,000, silver AUD 200,000, and bronze AUD 100,000.

One potential complication in player availability arises from the South African T20 league (SA20), which begins on January 10. Some players may opt to participate in this tournament during the closing stages of the BBL. Additionally, Pakistan also has a few commitments that clash with the BBL schedule.

In a significant change for the WBBL, overseas players will be selected through a draft system for the first time. Platinum players in the WBBL will earn AUD 110,000, gold players AUD 90,000, silver players AUD 65,000, and bronze players AUD 40,000. Players who choose the direct nomination route will be limited to earning a maximum of 95% of the silver category earnings. The WBBL is scheduled to run from October 19 to December 2.

In conclusion, the upcoming BBL and WBBL seasons promise excitement and competitiveness with the inclusion of top-notch international players in the platinum bracket. However, the uncertainty surrounding player availability due to international commitments and the attractiveness of other T20 leagues could add an element of unpredictability to the tournaments. Nevertheless, the increased salary bands and the introduction of a draft system in the WBBL signify a positive step forward in promoting and rewarding talent in Australian cricket. Fans can look forward to another thrilling season of T20 cricket Down Under.

One of the world’s most well-known cricket leagues is the Big Bash League (BBL). Only the IPL currently outperforms it in terms of popularity and viewership. International players from all over the world are one of the key factors in the popularity of the BBL.

The BBL is a professional T20 cricket league in Australia. Cricket Australia, the national governing organization for both professional and amateur cricket in Australia, established the BBL in 2011.

Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers, and Sydney Thunder are the eight city-based teams in the league.

With the exception of the Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Stars, every side in the league has at least one trophy win to their name since the league started. Perth Scorchers, who have won four Big Bash League championships, are the team with the most titles. The team from Perth won the league in the following years: 2013–2014, 2014–2015, 2016–2017, and 2021–2022.

Nathan Lyon signs a three-year contract with the Melbourne Renegades after a ten-year run with the Sydney Sixers

This BBL news might come as a shock to some cricket fans. Australian spin master Nathan Lyon has abruptly announced the end of his spectacular ten-year tenure with the Sydney Sixers. The off-spinner, a crucial member of the Sixers’ Big Bash League (BBL) team, participated in 34 games over the course of ten seasons. The Sixers’ success in the BBL 9 and BBL 10 was greatly aided by Lyon’s contribution.

However, the seasoned spinner is about to begin a new chapter after formally signing a three-year contract with the Melbourne Renegades ahead of the eagerly awaited BBL 2023–24 season. The transaction represents a significant shift in the BBL transfer market and has already aroused interest among both fans and industry insiders.

Lyon is eager to collaborate with Adam Zampa. Lyon showed his outstanding talent and bowling prowess throughout his time with the Sydney Sixers, taking an impressive total of 42 wickets. With this accomplishment, he moves up to fifth place among BBL franchise players in terms of wickets taken.

Lyon spoke with delight about his choice to sign with the Melbourne Renegades, underlining the allure of the renowned Marvel Stadium, where he enjoys bowling because to its spin-friendly characteristics. The 35-year-old veteran is also intrigued about the possibility of teaming up with fellow spinner Adam Zampa to build a powerful tandem.

The cricket star commented that he is overjoyed to be a member of the Melbourne Renegades. He likes to bowl there because it has a tendency to spin a little bit. He is excited to perhaps team up with “Zamps” in a really strong relationship and perform for the Renegades supporters.

Lyon underlined the Melbourne Renegades team’s culture of togetherness further, emphasizing the presence of close friends and a talented group of senior and younger players. This unity likely played a role in Lyon’s choice to transfer to the Renegades team, where he hopes to have a big impact in the upcoming seasons.

Aaron Finch’s Retirement will be lost to his team

Aaron Finch, the sole captain to lead Australia to victory in a T20 World Cup, has declared his retirement from international cricket on February 7, culminating a career that spanned over 12 years. Having already retired from ODI cricket before the T20 World Cup in 2022, Finch had expressed his intention to reevaluate his future after the conclusion of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2022-23. Shortly following the BBL’s conclusion, Finch revealed that he believes the time is ripe to move on.

Despite his consistent presence in Australia’s white-ball squads for the past decade, Finch often finds himself underrated and underappreciated in the modern cricket landscape. Here are three key reasons why Finch’s contributions have not received the recognition they truly deserve:

  1. Leadership During Challenging Times and World Cup Victory
Appointed as captain in the wake of the Sandpaper scandal that deeply impacted Australian cricket, Finch took on the pivotal role of leading Australia’s white-ball sides. Amidst questions about the integrity of the game and the team’s reputation, Finch stepped up as a respected figure to rebuild trust and regain the fans’ support. He played a central role in bringing Australia back to prominence. Under Finch’s leadership, Australia clinched their first-ever T20 World Cup title in 2021, breaking a long-standing jinx. Additionally, his captaincy during the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup was marked by skillful management, as he orchestrated a team without key players David Warner and Steve Smith and successfully reintegrated them just ahead of the tournament.
  2. Excellence in Opening the Innings
A majority of Finch’s career was spent opening the innings, a role that demands facing some of the finest bowlers in the game. Despite this challenging position, he consistently demonstrated exceptional performance. With an average of nearly 39 from 146 ODIs and 34.29 in T20Is, Finch exhibited remarkable consistency. He tallied 17 centuries in ODIs, ranking as the fourth highest for an Australian. His partnership with David Warner at the top of the order proved instrumental in Australia’s success in shorter formats.
  3. Prolific Run-Scorer in T20Is
Notably, Finch concluded his international career as Australia’s leading run-scorer in T20 Internationals, amassing 3120 runs across 103 appearances in the format. His average of 34.29 and a stellar strike rate of 142.53 underscore his effectiveness as a T20 batsman. Finch’s record includes two centuries in T20Is, with one each against England and Zimbabwe. His remarkable knock of 172 runs against Zimbabwe stands as a world record for the highest individual score in T20Is. In this innings, Finch unleashed a relentless assault, smashing 10 sixes and 16 boundaries. He reached his century in a mere 50 deliveries and partnered with fellow opener D’Arcy Short to establish a record-breaking stand. In summary, Aaron Finch’s retirement from international cricket marks the end of a notable career that often went underappreciated. His leadership during turbulent times, excellence in opening the innings, and remarkable run-scoring record in T20 Internationals collectively paint a portrait of a cricketer who made significant contributions to Australian cricket. As he bids farewell to the international stage, Finch’s legacy will stand as a testament to his enduring impact on the game.

BBL Score: Perth Scorchers triumphed over Brisbane Heat with a five-wicket victory and lifted BBL trophy

The grand finale of the Big Bash League 2022-23 unfolded at the Perth Stadium on February 4, pitting the Perth Scorchers against the Brisbane Heat. Earning their spot at the pinnacle, Perth capped their remarkable journey by finishing atop the points table with an impressive tally of 11 wins from 14 matches, amassing a total of 22 points. The Brisbane Heat, in contrast, found themselves positioned fifth on the table, their season marked by sporadic ups and downs. Nevertheless, their tenacity propelled them to the final showdown.

In the round-robin matches, the Heat exhibited a mixed bag of performances, alternating between brilliance and inconsistency. However, they shifted gears as the playoffs beckoned, surging through adversity to make it to the final stage. With their back against the wall, the Heat orchestrated an inspiring run of triumphs, stringing together three consecutive victories. This triumphant streak secured their place in the final, a feat achieved after having finished fifth on the points table.

The Heat’s exhilarating journey to the ultimate clash comprised a sequence of pivotal wins. First, they outlasted the Sydney Thunder in the Eliminator match, sealing an 8-run victory through the DLS method. Subsequently, they overpowered the Melbourne Renegades, fortifying their momentum. The pinnacle of their resurgence was the Challenger match, where they vanquished the Sydney Sixers, who had clinched second place in the standings. This triumphant trajectory earned the Heat a coveted spot in the final match.

On the flip side, the Perth Scorchers emerged as the standout team of the season. They navigated the league with consummate skill, culminating in their commanding presence at the top of the points table. Their prowess was on full display in the Qualifier, where they overcame the Sydney Sixers with a convincing 7-wicket victory, ensuring their place in the ultimate showdown. As the final loomed, the Scorchers held the upper hand, carrying the mantle of favorites into the high-stakes encounter.

Delving into the rosters of the competing sides, one might not immediately spot marquee international names. Yet, both the Perth Scorchers and Brisbane Heat managed to unearth game-changing talents when it mattered most. This phenomenon underscored the deep reservoir of T20 skill within Australia’s cricketing landscape. For the Scorchers, the pivotal players to watch were Aaron Hardie and Josh Inglis. Hardie, with 443 runs, ranked second in the tournament’s run-scoring charts, trailing only Matthew Short’s 458 runs. In the final, all eyes were on him to potentially surpass Short’s tally. On the opposite end, the leadership of Heat’s captain, Jimmy Peirson, stood out. His astute guidance played a pivotal role in shaping the Heat’s journey to the final, making him a linchpin in their quest for victory.

The climax of the competition witnessed the Perth Scorchers prevailing over the Brisbane Heat, securing a triumphant victory by five wickets, with three balls to spare. It was a scintillating performance by the Scorchers, marking a bittersweet conclusion for the valiant Brisbane Heat. The combined efforts of Hobson and the 19-year-old Connolly ultimately carried the Scorchers across the finish line, culminating in a gripping finale that will be etched in the annals of cricketing history.

After an underwhelming BBL season in 2018, Melbourne Stars have bolstered their bowling lineup with the addition of left-arm bowler Joel Paris from Western Australia.

Having previously represented both the Perth Scorchers and Hobart Hurricanes, Paris is on the brink of joining his third BBL team. His performance at the Sheffield Shield level for Western Australia has been remarkable, playing a crucial role in their consecutive Shield victories and earning him a place in the Australia A four-day cricket team.

Despite a career spanning 10 seasons and 37 BBL games, Paris has remained a peripheral figure in T20 cricket. His participation was limited, featuring in just 25 matches for the Perth Scorchers between 2013 and 2020, primarily due to three injury-ridden seasons. Often kept in reserve as a backup to Jason Behrendorff, the Scorchers carefully managed his workload to preserve his fitness for red-ball duties with Western Australia.

In 2021, he made the move to the Hobart Hurricanes in search of more T20 opportunities. However, he only managed to participate in a total of 12 matches spread across two seasons. Notably, his standout performance came under swinging conditions at the Gabba last season, where he claimed figures of 2 for 15 from four overs, including an impressive tally of 13 dot balls.

The Stars had previously picked international left-arm pacers Trent Boult and Luke Wood in the draft. With uncertainty around their availability, the team might have to utilize a top pick in the international draft to secure a potent spinner. Following Adam Zampa’s departure, the Stars seized the chance to fortify their squad by enlisting Paris, along with Australia Test bowler Scott Boland.

Ashwin, Chahal, and Zampa Royals’ three-card trick pays off despite the risk

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has always been known for bringing together some of the world’s top cricketers and creating dream teams that fans could only imagine in their wildest dreams. This year, one such dream team has flown under the radar, with not much fanfare, despite their incredible talent and experience.

We’re talking about the spin trio of Yuzvendra Chahal, R Ashwin, and Adam Zampa, who have come together to form one of the most lethal spin attacks in the history of the IPL. Between the three of them, Chahal, Ashwin, and Zampa have 874 T20 wickets, which is an impressive feat, to say the least. No other team in the IPL has ever fielded such a prolific spin attack, making the Rajasthan Royals’ spin trio one to watch this season. While other teams have tried to bring together spinners in the past, none have managed to put together a trio with as much pedigree, skill, body of work, and experience as the Royals have.

Ashwin, who is the most experienced of the three, has reimagined himself as a spinner and dismantled the bowler we knew, putting himself back together to become one of the most effective spinners in white-ball cricket. He has been told that there is no place for fingerspinners in limited-overs cricket, but he has proven the critics wrong time and again. Zampa, on the other hand, is a quicker legspinner who doesn’t give up the stumps and hardly ever gets lofted down the ground. He has been one of the most consistent performers for Australia in limited-overs cricket and has been a vital cog in the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s spin attack in the past. Chahal, the youngest of the trio, is a mix of both Ashwin and Zampa. He still targets the stumps, but he relies more on the sideways turn that he gets, making him a tough nut to crack for any batsman. He has been one of the most consistent performers for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, and his ability to pick wickets in the middle overs has been one of the main reasons for his success.

In the match against the Gujarat Titans, the Royals decided to field first and therefore included all three spinners in their starting XI. However, having two leg-spinners turned out to be a disadvantage for them as Hardik Pandya managed to dismiss Zampa during the powerplay but fell prey to Chahal later on. In the game, the spin trio bowled a total of 12 overs and conceded 105 runs, while Rashid Khan, who also played, gave away 46 runs. Despite this, the spinners continued to bowl during the powerplay and at the death, bowling four overs in both phases of the game. What makes this spin trio so lethal is their ability to work in tandem and put pressure on the batsmen from both ends. Among the three spinners in the Royals squad, Ashwin is considered the most reliable as he is a banker who doesn’t try to take unnecessary risks to get wickets. He has a good track record of maintaining a low economy rate and rarely concedes more than ten runs in his four overs. On the other hand, Zampa is a leg-spinner with a faster delivery, who is skilled at keeping the ball away from the stumps and preventing the opposition from hitting him down the ground. Chahal is the perfect mix of both, who can bowl both attacking and defensive lines, depending on the situation.

Michael Neser will replace Hazlewood in Australia’s 15-man squad for the Test and could still figure in the final XI should selectors opt to play the all-rounder ahead of Scott Boland.

Cricket Australia confirmed the news on Sunday night, with Hazlewood “very, very close” to playing according to chair of selectors George Bailey.

The Australian fast bowler will now focus on making himself available for selection in the first Ashes Test on June 16.

“Josh was very, very close to being given the green light but we are cognisant that our upcoming schedule means this is not a one-off Test match of us,” Bailey said.

“Michael’s County form has been strong and knowing that he was going to be close by allowed for him to keep playing and for us to be able to call on him. He is a great strength to have as part of the fast bowling group.

“This will give Josh an ideal preparation leading into Edgbaston. With six Test matches in a little over seven weeks we will need all of our fast bowling assets.”
